Alternatives to Lawns

What are the alternatives?

Naturalistic landscaping demonstration site at the Connecticut College Arboretum. A managed landscape since the 1950's.

The backyard of Dr. William Niering. An example of naturalistic landscaping and the reduction of lawn size through the practice of mowing annually as well as transplanting desirable herbaceous plant material suited for a meadow environment.

"The Prairie" located in the Native Plant Collection of the Connecticut College Arboretum. A favorite of children throughout the summer which swarms with insect, birds, and other critters throughout the summer and into the fall. A serene location which inspires ponderous thoughts and which provides a breathtaking view of the Arboretum Pond from autumn into the coldest months of winter.

A meadow located between the Arboretum pond and the Gries Conifer Collection in the Native Plant Collection of the Connecticut College Arboretum. Mowed annually, this meadow is an example of the beauty inherent in our local plant communities given the minimum of managed maintenance.

A view of Haley farm taken in 1981. This site provides just another example of the outstanding natural character of minimally managed old field sites preserved as a testament to our inheritance of a post-agricultural environment.
