Education for Nikkei Adults
Most Nikkei Adults do not take advantage of the educational
opportunities that are available. After working 10-12 hours a
day 6 days a week they lack the energy to attend classes. However
some adults have balanced their lives in order to make room for
Japanese language instruction. The Escolinha Centro Nipo- Brasiliero
offers such classes to the adults. These Nikkei feel
that learning Japanese is an asset to their stay in Japan.
The majority of the Nikkei adults feel that their time
would be better spent working overtime, shortening their stay
in Japan.
They feel that their stay in Japan
is very temporary and do not see the need to learn the language.
Many also do not want anything to do with the Japanese, other
than receiving their paychecks. These Nikkei adults feel
that by learning Japanese they are relinquishing their culture
as Brazilians. These adults that do not make that effort to learn
Japanese can easily get through daily life by relying on the Brazilian
community.
