Creating a place for the Nikkei- Brazilian children

Nikkei- Brazilian children in Oizumi pose a challenge both for the city government and for the local Brazilian community. City officials have made a great effort to provide Japanese language programs in the public school system to integrate Nikkei-Brazilian children. The children's education was designed to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, ultimately creating a place for them in Japanese society.

The Brazilian community in Oizumi, interested in maintaining their children's fluency in Portuguese, sends their children to Portuguese language schools, such as Escolinha da Professora Rebecca, Escolinha Centro Nipo- Brasiliero and S.O.S. Brasil Kids.
In addition to the schools, various publications help to promote educational mobility for Nikkei children, aiding their adaptation to Japanese language and schooling. Portuguese magazines include Japanese lessons teaching Kanji (Chinese characters) and important words.
Publications teaching Portuguese also exist. The demand comes from Nikkei, who want their children to maintain or create Portuguese language skills and knowledge of Brazilian culture. The new colorful newspaper for children, "Jornal Criança & Cultura," is one of these publications. The newspaper teaches children Portuguese vocabulary, Brazilian culture and geography, and how to write roman characters in cursive.
