Based on the Studs Terkel book of the same name, the musical "Working" looks at the American worker through songs, ensembles, scenes, and monologues, with a view to ensuring the dignity of those whose jobs aren't the ones that society tends to glamorize - be it waitress or construction worker or receptionist or parking-lot attendant. The original Broadway production was directed and spearheaded by Stephen Schwartz ("Godspell," "Pippin," "Wicked"), though the musical score was written by a group of six composers and lyricists, including the renowned James Taylor. Schwartz himself wrote five of the numbers.

THE INCREASED DIFFICULTY OF CONCENTRATION

By Vàclav Havel
Directed by Ben Fisher '08
Tansill Theater

Tickets: students $6.00, general $8.00

Dr. Eduard Huml, a social scientist, is struggling to maintain both a marriage and an affair while simultaneously attempting to seduce his secretary and write an essay on the nature of happiness. Into this maelstrom is thrown a team of government researchers whose mission is to measure Huml's individuality with the aid of a machine called Puzuk. Part romantic farce and part political allegory, the play looks at the comedy and danger of what happens when people choose to be dominated and dehumanized. This irreverent, nonlinear, absurd comedy is the third play by Václav Havel, the celebrated writer, revolutionary, and former president of the Czech Republic.
