Theater

Our program emphasizes acting and directing, yet we encourage students to study and work on all elements of theater; acting, directing, design, technical theater, playwriting, dramaturgy, and dramatic literature — so that they understand the entire process of creating theater.

We believe that the best theater arises from collaborations based on mutual respect, and that the power of a creative ensemble is greater than the sum of its parts.

We seek to balance the intellectual and experiential development of the student in the classroom and on the stage; in this way we provide students with the opportunity to discover and explore their individual creative abilities.

We see theater as part of a dialogue with the college, the larger community, and the world. Through study away programs at the O'Neill National Theater Institute in Waterford, CT, the O'Neill Moscow Art Theater Semester (MATS) in Moscow, Russia and the British American Drama Academy, among others, students broaden their experience globally.

We believe that a broad liberal arts education in theater produces graduates who are adaptable and process-oriented. This education serves as a foundation for their future development as thinking artists and productive citizens.
